Simulated work experience report

-What where the roles you were given?

I was mainly responsible for helping Shan Gao of year 2 with her stop-motion figures and will continue to help her with her scenes at the end of March. Her animation is mixed media animation with 2D animation, stop-motion and hand-drawn animation. Since I have experience making stop-motion figures and scenes, she would like me to help her with these two parts of her animation.

-Did you complete the roles and what feedback did you receive?

Because she only started making her figures in the last week, it was unlikely that we could finish the figures in one day, and I helped her mainly with the skeleton on that day.

-What could you have improved on?/-What new skills / techniques did you learn?

There is a lot to learn from the people who made stop-motion animation with year2, because the stop-motion animation courses they took are basically different from ours, and the methods they used to make the dolls are not quite the same as what we learned this year. Including the production structure and skin method, I learned a lot of new production methods from her.

-How does the roles you where given relate to industry roles?

It is very similar to the pre-preparation role in stop-motion animation, because the preparation period for stop-motion animation is very complex and long, and often requires some help in preparation.

-What would you bring into your practice from this experience?

I might try to learn some new stop-motion animation methods from year2 students and then apply them to my production. I also like mixed material animation, so I hope to help Shan Gao of year2 to finish this animation later, which will help me learn more.

-Did you enjoy the experience?

Yes, Shan Gao’s work itself references several anime that I also like very much, and I was interested in this story she wrote, and we got along very well.

-How did you utilize the skills you have learnt so far on the course?

Yes. Like I mentioned before year2 is different from the stop-motion classes we’ve taken, they learn to make dolls mostly with rubbers, and the year2 student I was working with happened to want to make some doll parts and clothes out of wool felt. She hadn’t made anything with wool felt before, so I told her some production methods, but she hadn’t gotten that far yet because of the time problem, and I would help her make some wool felt stuff afterwards.
